Boris Vian’s Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Here’s the update regarding my Rizzoli Books edition of “Boris Vian’s Saint-Germain-des-Prés.”

The book is now scheduled to come out in June 2005. For those who are new to this project – this is the first English translation of “Boris Vian’s Manual de Saint-Germain-des-Prés” and it is translated by Paul Knobloch, who also did the masterful translation of Vian’s (and the next title by TamTam) “Autumn in Peking.”

“Saint-Germain-des-Prés” will be a coffee table sized book with text by Vian and photographs by Georges Dudognon, who happened to be a fly in the wall with respect to Vian and his own swinging world. The photographs are amazing, and if you are curious check out the Amazon website, where they have some examples of his work. Just look under the name Boris Vian – and the book should pop up.

What make this book so unique are not only the photographs, which are dazzling, but Vian’s take on his ‘pop’ culture as it was happening at the time (1949). The book will feature everyone from Juliette Gréco to Orson Welles to Jean-Paul Sartre. Truly a fascinating group of individuals in one place and at the same time. This promises to be another TamTam (with help from Rizzoli) masterpiece!
