TamTam Books News

Thursday, June 12, 2003:

This is regarding the new English translations by Ken Knabb of Guy Debord's films.

Latest News on the Films

Guy Debord made six films between 1952 and 1978. Following the still-unsolved assassination of the films’ producer in 1984, all of them were withdrawn from circulation for nearly twenty years.

In 2001 Debord’s widow Alice began the process of rereleasing them with a complete retrospective at the Venice Film Festival. In 2002 there was another complete showing in Paris. It is expected that the films will eventually be made generally available (hopefully sometime in 2004), but so far no definite schedule has been set for this. Whenever I have any further information, it will be posted on this (http://www.bopsecrets.org/SI/debord.films) webpage.

While we’re waiting for the films themselves, there are pirate video copies of two of the films: The Society of the Spectacle and its short sequel Refutation of All the Judgments. Copies with English subtitles are available from the subtitle translator, Keith Sanborn (c/o Ediciones la Calavera, P.O. Box 1106, Peter Stuyvesant Station, New York, NY 10009). Cheaper second-generation copies of the same videos are available from Not Bored.

New Translation of the Scripts

In November 2001 Alice Debord asked me to make a new translation of Guy Debord’s complete film scripts, both for publication and for subtitling the films. I agreed, and worked on the project for the next year and a half. The book — entitled Complete Cinematic Works and published by AK Press — is now available.
